Musings from ethical PR girl about the world around us and making the most of PR/marketing to promote what you do (in an ethical way of course).

About

Hello

Thanks for visiting.

My name’s Helen Ashley and I’m a UK-based, award-winning PR with a passion for promoting social, economic and environmental issues.

I have twenty years plus experience – working mainly with not for profit and public sector bodies –  helping them build their reputations, promote what they do and manage their communications. I have worked in-house, agency-side and as a freelance.

I blog about marketing and PR, the not for profit sector, diversity in PR, charities I feel passionately about and occasionally about personal stuff.

I’m  available for hire as a freelance or for in-house positions in the public or not for profit sectors. So if you need someone to project manage or write your annual report, organise an event, run a PR or marketing campaign, undertake a communications audit,  or provide interim in-house media, PR or marketing support in London or the Home Counties, then do get in touch.

I believe in giving back to the sectors in which I work and my profession. So in my spare time I act as Media Spokesperson for the CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) Diversity Group http://www.cipr.co.uk/content/pr-resources/diversity-strategy.  You can join us at http://www.facebook.com/CIPR.DIVERSITY. The CIPR’s Diversity Group works to promote a more diverse workforce in the PR profession with a focus on people from BME backgrounds, people with disabilities and helping women break through the ‘glass ceiling’.

And I offer PR and media training and pro bono consultancy support  through The Media Trust https://www.themediatrust.com/ to help smaller charities who can’t afford to pay for PR support.

When not doing my day job, I have a passion for travelling off the beaten track, watching sunsets and sailing (preferably in warmer climes).  And adding to my every growing collection of recipes and cookery books.

I’m always happy to offer free PR and marketing advice to smaller charities and not for profits, so if you would like some help, do leave me a message on my blog.

And if you are looking for a charity PR for hire, I’d love to hear from you; helenmaryashley@hotmail.co.uk or call me on 07976 804314.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  5. Hi Helen,

Great to come across your blog. I’m studying PR and been thinking long and hard about the direction I would like to take my career. Your blog and what you do has inspired me even more to go the social, not-for-profit, activism route. I will definitely be following you.

    • Thank you Tegan

There are some amazing charities, not for profits, social enterprises and grassroots campaigns in S.A. that would really benefit from gaining your skills.

Perhaps (if you don’t already) start off by volunteering your support to gain some experience in the sector. This will help to give you some experience and also for you to get an understanding of the type of issues and PR you might like to focus on.

In the UK you can either work in-house or agency-side if you want to work in the not for profit sector.

We also have the CIPR http://www.cipr.co.uk with a thriving student membership which offers lots of advice to graduates wanting to enter PR. Some of it will hopefully also be relevant for you.

      Good luck in your career.

      Helen
